Turn a PDF into an audiobook

How a PDF becomes chapters
Bookmarks in the PDF become chapters, named after the bookmarks. A PDF without bookmarks is split where a page starts with a heading such as "Chapter 3", "Part Two" or "Act I", or after about 3,200 words. Each part is named after its heading, or after its pages, such as "Pages 12–24". To leave out the cover, title page, copyright page and contents, pick the chapter where the book starts and press Start from here.
Turn a PDF into audio without the page clutter
Two free settings are on from the start. "Remove headers and footers" leaves out the lines that repeat at the top and bottom of the pages. "Fix broken lines and page numbers" joins the lines of each paragraph, joins words split with a hyphen, and leaves out page numbers. Two-column pages are read left column first. With Pro, you also choose what happens to small-print footnotes, the reference list and figure captions.
How the voices read a PDF
Free has 2 natural voices: Heart, a warm US female voice, and Fenrir, a strong US male voice. Pro has 13 in US and UK English. Each voice has a sample you can play first. Before a passage is read, common short forms are spelled out: "e.g." is read as "for example", "Dr." as "Doctor", and "Chapter IV" as "Chapter Four". A web address is read as its site name only. With Pro, a pronunciation list makes every name sound right.
