Text files

In TXT files, lines such as "Chapter 1" start chapters. In Markdown, # and ## start chapters, and code blocks are skipped. In scripts, each character's name is read before their line.

Word to audio

DOCX files from Word, Google Docs and Pages work; Heading 1 and Heading 2 start chapters.

DOCX to audio

Free makes an MP3 file for each chapter of a DOCX file, up to three hours of audio. Pro has no length limit.

Questions

Does it find the chapters?

Can I check the text first?

Yes. The text preview shows the text before you convert it.

Can I turn a Word document into an audiobook?

Can I listen while it works?

Yes. Listening starts within a minute or two.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The file is opened and the audio is made in your browser.

Convert text to audio

Open a TXT, Word (DOCX) or Markdown (MD) file, check the text preview, pick a chapter to start from, choose a voice, and press Convert book. You can start listening within a minute or two, and download each chapter as an MP3 as soon as it is made. Free makes up to three hours of audio, once per account.

TXT to audio

In a TXT file, a line such as "Chapter 1", "Part Two", "Act I" or "Scene 3" starts a new chapter. Text before the first such line becomes its own chapter, named Opening. To leave it out, pick the next chapter and press Start from here. Lines that break in the middle of a paragraph are joined, and lines with only a page number are left out.

Chapters in Word documents

In a Word document, Heading 1 and Heading 2 start chapters, named after the headings. Paragraphs, lists and tables are read in order. DOCX files saved from Word, Google Docs and Pages work.

Markdown to audio

In Markdown, # and ## headings start chapters. Code blocks are skipped, and the writing around them is read.

Scripts and notes

  • Scripts: in a script with scene lines that start with "INT." or "EXT.", each character's name is read before their line, and "INT." and "EXT." are read as "Interior" and "Exterior".
  • Notes and lists: in meeting notes and documents made mostly of lists, each item is read as its own sentence.

Text to audio with natural voices

Free has 2 natural voices; Pro has 13 in US and UK English. Before a passage is read, "e.g." is read as "for example", "i.e." as "that is", "Dr." as "Doctor", "&" as "and", and a web address as its site name. With Pro, the pronunciation list fixes any word, every place it appears.
