How to convert a PDF to MP3 for free

Open the PDF on this page, pick a chapter to start from, choose one of the two free voices, and press Convert book. The chapters are made in order, and you can start listening within a minute or two. Download each chapter as an MP3 as soon as it is finished. Free makes up to three hours of audio, once per account, with no card and no subscription.

Convert a PDF book to MP3 chapters

Bookmarks in the PDF become chapters, named after the bookmarks. A PDF without bookmarks is split where a page starts with a heading such as "Chapter 3", "Part Two" or "Act I", or after about 3,200 words. Each part is named after its heading, or after its pages, such as "Pages 12–24". To leave out the cover, title page, copyright page and contents, pick the chapter where the book starts and press Start from here.

Clean PDF text before it is read

The text preview shows what will be read before you convert. Two settings are free and on from the start:

  • "Remove headers and footers" leaves out the lines that repeat at the top and bottom of the pages.
  • "Fix broken lines and page numbers" joins the lines of each paragraph, joins words split with a hyphen at the end of a line, and leaves out page numbers.

Two-column pages are read left column first.

Footnotes, references and captions with Pro

With Pro, you choose what happens to the small-print notes at the bottom of a page: skip them, read them where they appear, or read them at the end of the chapter. You can skip the reference list, from its "References", "Bibliography" or "Works cited" heading to the end of the chapter. Captions that start with "Figure", "Fig." or "Table" and a number can be skipped or read.

Convert PDF to voice MP3

Free has 2 natural voices: Heart, a warm US female voice, and Fenrir, a strong US male voice. Pro has 13 natural voices in US and UK English, and a pronunciation list, so every name sounds right. Each voice has a sample you can play first. The natural voices run in your browser after a one-time voice preparation.

MP3 file names and tags

Each chapter is one MP3 file at 96 kbps. The file name has the book title, the chapter number and the chapter title, such as "My Book - 03 Chapter Three.mp3", so the files stay in order in any player. Each file is tagged with the book's title, the author and the genre Audiobook. With Pro, you can also download all finished chapters as MP3 files in one ZIP, or as one M4B audiobook with chapters and a cover, even before the whole book is done.
